Eclipse and Education

By Linda Barney, Barney and Associates

Eclipse is rapidly being adopted by educators in schools, universities, and for adult learning. Because Eclipse is open source, it is the perfect platform for use by educators because it is inexpensive, has a number of plugins, and allows collaboration. During EclipseCon 2004, a group met to discuss how Eclipse is being used, to exchange ideas, and to possibly collaborate on some projects. Here is a summary of how EclipseCon attendees are using Eclipse for education.

Easy Communication School Information System (ECSIS )

ECSIS is part of an Eclipse project to promote Eclipse teaching aids and courseware. Members collaborate on ideas and tools.

University of Victoria, Canada

Gild is an environment used by the University of Victoria, Canada as a tool to facilitate teaching. Dr. Margaret Anne Story helped develop Gild using requirements gathered from students and instructors. Gild is an Eclipse plugin that provides cognitive support for students learning how to program while providing support for instructors to help them with teaching activities. There are 350 students using it. Gild also lets instructors manage shared course materials for making assignments in Eclipse. For more information, see http://gild.cs.uvic.ca

Purdue University:

Purdue has a project using Eclipse for Introductory Programming. They developed their own perspective called Penumbra that shows classes, extends interfaces, and allows check-ins. The team also used Eclipse to simplify the perspective.

University of California, Irving

The University of California at Irving is using Eclipse in teaching Software Engineering. They choose Eclipse because it provides a unified tools suite and they thought that it was truly integrated. Students use Eclipse and CVS in the classroom and in labs.

University of Washington

The University of Washington uses Eclipse in their classes.

University of San Paolo

The University of San Paolo uses Eclipse in coursework. one class teaches students how to use Eclipse, there is a plugin development course, and an extreme programming class. They use Eclipse because it has so many features that can be built into "extreme" programming."

Indian Institute of Technology

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur teaches students to code using Eclipse because it is easy for the students to learn. They are also using Eclipse to teach computer science concepts. Professor Tadinada Venkata Prabhakar has produced an Indian language editor in Eclipse that may be included as a general plugin in Eclipse 3.0.

Adult Teaching Using Eclipse

Boeing: Boeing is training adults how to program using Eclipse.

IBM: IBM has developed an Eclipse "Training Perspective" with content and exercises using Eclipse. It is real time and can be used by various students. The IBM Group Collaborative Learning Experience group is developing with Eclipse and they have added collaborative portions to Eclipse such as chat and real-time edits. IBM Research has a Research Innovation Grant project. For 2004, they are funding 78 projects and most of the grant money will be for teaching.
