And FYI - I'm using eclipse 3.2 + MyEclipse 5
New install -
don't try doing the initiall installation from the update site
-- Eclipse RSS Reader for WSAD (1.3.0) requires plug-in "org.eclipse.update.ui.forms".
download the installer - install-com.pnehrer.rss_2.0.2.jar
and run: java -jar install-com.pnehrer.rss_2.0.2.jar
- nice, professional looking installer, installs into a separate directory,
and includes (required) Program File Shortcut for your windows start menu (not my style)
autodetect path to eclipse failed -
didn't like the myeclipse folder (plugins) and kept bringing me back to the default My Documents folder when I clicked Browse (annoying). I'd rather it remembered where I was last, and perhaps had a link to 'default location' if I wanted to get back.
Finally liked it when I set it to c:/Program Files/eclipse (eclipse 3.2 installation where myeclipse is installed to.
where is yours set to? right click the short cut you use to run myeclipse to see the path.
set up a feed by creating a new file type 'RSS Channel' New -> Other -> Rss -> Rss Channel
set the title and the url, and your done.
feed now shows up in the 'Channel navigator' view. Reading or marking an item as read deletes it from the list of articles (would prefer bold/unbold UI instead, but at least this is a workable solution).
reading all links on a channel greys out the channel
when you click a channel, the Channel detail view opens and lists all the items in the channel - including the read items( greyed out ) so you can find items you previously read.
Each items content on the channel details view is listed in a single line description field - not very readable. - would prefer at least have a multiline description popup on mouse-over
ideally I'd really like clicking on a feed title to open a summary of the items in the main editor - perhaps as an html page where I can view the items rendered properly.
clicking new 'Channel navigator using Auto-discovery' enter the url of a web page and it will list the available feeds.
didn't like it when I entered a rss feed as the source url, Load wasn't triggered by hitting the enter key.
slow, but worked on http://slashdot.org
still had to click the 'Load' button again on the RSS Channel create step - mildly annoying.
Overall working well so far, delivers on its promises but I would prefer a couple minor tweaks before I would recommend it as a reader of choice. If you're just looking for one that integrates with eclipse - this one will do.
