SQL Edge not only allows users to execute SQL scripts, but also provides a powerful way to visualize data relationships. With SQL Edge, users can use only one query to retrieve data in a master table, and then browse data in all related detail tables. Users can also insert, edit, and delete table records in the data grids.
SQL Edge has six perspectives. The "Query Perspective" allows users to run any SQL queries and scripts. It supports Oracle PL/SQL, PostgreSQL PL/pgSQL, DB2, MySQL, SQL Anywhere Watcom SQL and Transact-SQL scripts. The "Schema Perspective" allows users to browse database schema information and create tables, views, synonyms and sequences.
The "Relationship Table View" displays data in the master-detail style. The "Relationship Tree View" displays master table records as top-level tree nodes. The nodes can be expanded to reveal any level of related detail records. In addition, clicking any node will display the corresponding data in a detail grid.
The "Model Perspective" displays tables and their relationships in ER diagrams. It supports auto-layout, outline view, and multi-page print preview.
The "Execution Plan Perspective" displays the execution plan of a query. It supports Oracle and PostgreSQL execution plans.
The version 3.3 added following features:
- Added support for MaxDB database. Allow users to browse schema information, execute SQL queries and draw ER diagrams for MaxDB database.
- Support incremental refresh of database explorer so that users can refresh database information at schema node level.
The following are the version 3.2 features:
- Support Oracle, DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Sybase SQL Anywhere, Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise, and any JDBC compatible databases.
- Support Windows, Linux and Mac OS X operating systems.
- Provide wizards to help setup JDBC connections. Easy to install, and easy to setup.
- SQL editor executes SQL queries asynchronously. Users can cancel the execution by click the "Cancel" button or simply close the editor.
- Supports Oracle PL/SQL, PostgreSQL PL/pgSQL, DB2, Sybase, MySQL and Transact-SQL scripts.
- Supports editable query result window. The data grid of the query result window is editable if all selected columns are from one table and also include the primary key of the table.
- Schema perspective displays the table schema information, including column definitions, primary key, indexes, and foreign keys. It also displays the script information of views, sequences, stored procedures, triggers and packages for Oracle, DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Sybase, and MySQL databases based on whether the database supports these objects.
- support creating tables, views, synonyms and sequences in the schema perspective.
- Relationship table view displays the related data in the master-detail style.
- Relationship tree view displays master table records as top-level tree nodes. The nodes can be expanded to reveal any level of related detail records.
- Allow users to insert, edit, and delete records in the data grids of the relationship views.
- Allow users to define master-detail relationships even between tables in different databases. This enables the relationship views to display data relationships between tables in different databases or without pre-defined foreign keys.
- Model perspective displays tables and their relationships in ER diagrams. It supports auto-layout, outline view, and multi-page print preview. It also allows users to customize fonts and colors of diagram objects. The diagram can be saved in an XML file and shared between different users, or exported to JPEG, GIF, SVG and PNG files.
- Execution plan perspective displays the execution plan of a query. It supports Oracle and PostgreSQL execution plans.

A few notes:
1. SQL Edge is an Eclipse Rich Client Application, not a plugin.
It's like a Windows application just as Toad or DB Visualizer.
2. You can edit the PL/SQL package in the SQL Editor and click execute tool bar
button to install it.
3. We will definitely improve the refresh function.
4. A few selling points:
1) the relationship view allows users to see any level of related objects.
2) model view displays ER-diagrams supporting out-line view and multi-page
print preview.
The major goal of the product is for OO developers to access the data
relationship easily instead of another tool to support PL/SQL development.
| | User: Anonymous | Rating: 3 | 2007-08-15 19:02:56 | | | I was looking at this "plugin" to provide an Eclipse-based PL/SQL editor/environment for my Oracle XE project. The product description declared "Supports Oracle PL/SQL", however I discovered it does *not* support editing of PL/SQL packages; it only supports PL/SQL as a language in it's scripting window e.g. as an alternative to normal SQL. This should be made much clearer in the product description.
For a product that is at version 3.2, it is also surprising to see such obvious beginner bugs as the refresh bug: with a schema tree expanded, right-clicking "refresh" collapses the entire tree back to the top level node, thus losing your current navigation/editing/viewing location.
Generally speaking the navigation is sorely lacking. It appears to not keep track of what object you have selected in the tree.
In addition, the download comes packaged as a complete Eclipse environment, not a plugin.
This "plugin" filled none of my requirements and would be hard to recommend to anybody, especially when it is a paid product. I'll give it 3 purely for the effort expended, but why anyone would *choose* to use it is beyond me.
Check out the free SQL Developer from Oracle. It's not Eclipse-based and is hardly perfect but for the most part it works.

How convenient that all those 10 votes are logged from IP addresses around the San Jose, CA area - just where Baybreeze Inc., author of this plugin, is located.
You should let the community decide about the rating of your offering.
If this does not stop I will bring this issue to an even greater audience.
