nWire for PHP Released: Real-Time PHP Code Visualization and Exploration

Posted by: zvikico - on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 - 03:51 PM

Visualize, navigate and search PHP code with nWire for PHP, a plugin for Eclipse PDT and Zend Studio. nWire provides code analysis for large scale and enterprise PHP applications, enabling significant development cost reduction.

nWire Software, Ltd., an independent software vendor offering innovative Eclipse-based tools, today announced the general availability of nWire for PHP. nWire for PHP accelerates PHP development by helping developers navigate through their code and better understand the architecture of their application. nWire was developed with support from Zend, the PHP Company, and it is the first plugin to be based on the new Zend Studio 7 and the latest Eclipse PHP Development Tools 2.1 (PDT).

"Large, complex, PHP applications can be overwhelming, even for the most experienced web developer. Reading an individual piece of code is easy, the challenge is understanding the structure of the application, getting the bigger picture. It turns out that most developers spend more time on reading and understanding code than writing it," said Zviki Cohen, founder and chief software architect for nWire Software. "Having a centralized view of all the application components and associations, coupled with unique search and visualization tools expedites the coding process greatly. We aim to make developers more productive and shorten the learning curve for new developers."

nWire adds a unique view into how single components (e.g. classes, method) fit within a project's architecture and its dependent relationships. For the first time, PHP developers gain valuable insights regarding their code. With a few clicks one may instantly determine where a given file is being used, where a class is instantiated, where a method is invoked and much more.

"As PHP applications scale and meet rapidly expanding requirements, the use of advanced, design-pattern based architectures is becoming more and more widespread. While advanced frameworks like Zend Framework provide great basis to build on, making the most of them can sometimes be challenging.", said Zeev Suraski, co-founder and CTO at Zend Technologies. "nWire's solution, sporting tight integration with Zend Studio 7.0 and PDT, enables developers to build and maintain complex, large-scale applications while greatly reducing the time and pain normally involved with understanding existing application architecture and code. I believe many developers will find it as an invaluable addition to their toolbox."

nWire utilizes intelligent static code analysis techniques during the coding process to keep a live database of the application components and associations. The following tools are available:

  • nWire Navigator - a unique tool for browsing any type of association in the application code: type inheritance, file inclusion, method invocation and more. This view can be synchronized with the PHP code editor to provide instant context while reading the code.
  • nWire Quick Search - search as you type for any element in the system, including methods and fields. Once a relevant component is found, a single click will reveal all its' associated components.
  • nWire Visualizer - graphically browse the system elements and visualize the associations between them. Filter the associations to produce different types of graphs. Exported images serve as a time saving enhancement for code reviews and developer documentation.

The key benefits of nWire:

  • Reduce the learning curve for new developers, including contractors. nWire can lead to substantial budget savings when outsourcing development tasks.
  • Expedites modifications to existing code by developers other than the original author.
  • Improve software quality. Full understanding of the application architecture contributes to keeping it sound and prevents bugs beforehand.
  • Reduce the testing time after a code change. Using nWire, the developer or QA engineer may determine which pages might be affected by a given code change and focus the testing on relevant parts.

nWire requires no special configuration nor code adaptation and provides a simple installation process, based on the Eclipse standards. nWire for PHP is available today at an introductory price of $59 for a perpetual license (volume discounts available). A free, 30 day trial is available on the nWire web site.

In other news

nWire for Java version 1.2 was released today with important enhancements like a smarter navigator view and improved performance. nWire for Java can be installed alongside with nWire for PHP.

Posted by: mdjohns5 - on Wednesday, October 07, 2009 - 03:20 PM

Momentum continues for popular Eclipse-based AJAX GUI building tool

Instantiations, Inc., a leading provider of software quality, security and productivity solutions for the Eclipse open source software platform, today announced an upgrade to version 7.2 of its popular graphical user interface (GUI) building product, GWT Designer™. GWT Designer v7.2 includes support for the Ext GWT (GXT) Java library, as well as continued support for the latest releases of Google Web Toolkit (GWT) through v1.7.1, the addition of a multi-page CSS Style Editor, and other CSS enhancements and speed improvements.

“Instantiations has done an excellent job with GWT Designer. I have been a happy user for two years now, and will attest that this product takes the pain out of creating GWT applications,” said Lawrence Rama, Senior Software Engineer and GWT Designer customer. “I just tried the new feature with Ext GWT. It's awesome. Not only is it faster, but the improvements are great. I'm going to start porting my app to GXT right away. I've been trying to promote GWT Designer to everyone I know, pointing out the fact that its reasonably priced and it does what it’s supposed to do exceptionally well.”

As the preeminent Eclipse-based GUI creation tool for use with GWT, GWT Designer supports such features as drag-and-drop GUI building and bi-directional code generation, and provides several useful wizards to make GWT development easier. GWT Designer was the first comprehensive tool for creating Ajax web applications, and is built on the award-winning WindowBuilder™ Pro, Instantiations market-leading Eclipse tool for creating Java GUI applications. WindowBuilder Pro was recently awarded the “Best Commercial Eclipse-Based Developer Tool” by the Eclipse Foundation at EclipseCon 2009.

“The addition of GXT support allows our users to choose between the most popular widget libraries, and significantly enhances the design possibilities using GWT Designer,” said Eric Clayberg, senior vice president of product development, co-founder of Instantiations, Inc. and author of Eclipse Plug-ins. “We are committed to staying current with Google’s GWT updates, and are always listening to our customers to determine which third-party widget-kits we should support. Responding to our customers needs is the primary reason for GWT Designer’s continued popularity.”

GWT Designer 7.2 Features
GWT Designer uses wizards, WYSIWYG builders and code generation to help developers rapidly create and test GUIs in Eclipse and Java before deploying them as Ajax applications. GWT Designer 7.2 includes the following new features and enhancements:

Comprehensive support for the Ext GWT (GXT) v2.0.1 widget library. This widely-requested addition to the design workbench lets GWT Designer take advantage of Ext GWT’s robust Java library for building rich internet applications.

With this support, GWT Designer adds multiple Ext GWT-specific palette categories for Ext GWT Panels, Layouts, Widgets, Forms, Menus and Toolbars. It provides WYSIWYG editing for all Ext GWT components, properties and layouts, and also adds several Ext GWT-specific wizards for creating Ext GWT Windows, Dialogs and Composites.

Stays in sync with GWT 1.7, which adds better support for Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 3.5 and Safari 4.
Improved CSS Support. Enhancements have been made to CSS editing, with a new multi-page CSS Style Editor; enhancements to the CSS Style Editor Dialog and CSS Style Name property, and more.
Parsing and Speed Improvements throughout.

Pricing and Availability
GWT Designer is available through a subscription of $79 for one year, $129 for 2-years, $179 for 3-years, or a perpetual license is $169 with one year of support. Current up-to-date subscription holders of GWT Designer can upgrade to new versions at no cost as part of their annual license.
