An error screen pops up with the following error:

Maven Wizard Error:

org.eclipse.swt.layout.GridData

When I run maven workshop under 3.1M7 I also get a "Maven Wizard Error"...it shows up as a small option window with an X and an OK button.

I had the same experience but resolved it by switching to MEVENIDE.
